Frequently Asked Questions

What is telehealth/ telemedicine/ teleadvice?

Anything which uses a remote device or technology to allow an owner and a veterinarian to consult over a distance when not physically in the smae space is considered telehealth.  Telemedicine is the provision of medical diagnostics, prognosis,  and discussion of treatment plans specific to your own patient.  Teleadvice is the provision of much more general advice related to general cases and conditions, but maybe not specific to your case.  For example, discussing a lameness in your horse and consulting on his radiographs and ultrasounds to come up with a plan specific to his injury is considered telemedicine.  Giving general advice about how horses with a tendon injury usually rehabilitate, for example, could be considered teleadvice.  The distinction is legally important because many states only permit true telemedicine consultations after a physical in-person examination has taken place.  Some states even dictate that this physical has to be performed annually.

What states allow Telemedicine

In the USA, follow this link to see if your state permits full telemedicine service or if our consults should be limited to more general teleadvice.  https://vvca.org/resources/telemedicine-map/

I
n the United Kingdom, recent changes permit us to establish a veterinary client patient relationship (VCPR) virtually.  However, we are currently limited in certain geographical locations of the USA.

Are you licensed and insured?

We are licensed in many  US States and are Members of the Royal College in the UK.  We carry professional liability insurance in exactly the same way as vets working in clinics.

What types of cases can you help with?

Anything that could be examined via a phone camera is a good case.  We specialize in lameness and poor performance cases.  Cases which are accompanied by imaging from your primary vet are great cases to work on.  Or, if you are just seeing some specialist level veterinary advice for your horse, we are here for you.  We can't really help with emergencies or other cases where your horse should be seen in person by a veterinarian.
The only in person services we currently offer are UTC ultrasound scans for research purposes in specific geographic locations.

How can you treat my horse if you are only a telehealth service?

It is often said that the most expensive treatment is the one that doesn't work.  We believe that "Absent a diagnosis, medicine is poison, surgery is trauma, alternative therapy is witchcraft, and rehab is a waste of time" (Kent Allen DVM).  Our expertise is in guiding you to the correct answer and the correct treatment plan.  We usually work very closely with your primary vet to make sure any treatment suggestions we make can be implemented by them.   We wont be the ones undertaking the procedures: rather we are directing traffic to ensure the best diagnostics and treatment plans are in place.  In short, your local vet will be doing the treatments and we provide the specialist consult to make sure the plan is optimal.
The only exception to this is our UTC service, which we perform during an in=person examination of your horse for research purposes in specific geographical locations.
